CELEBRATE THE 2017 FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH

CELEBRATE THE FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH

Chicago, Il. – In 2009, the US Congress thru the House of Senate and House of Representatives respectively passed H. Res. 780 recognizing October 2011 and every October thereafter as Filipino American History Month (FAHM) to celebrate the history and culture of Filipino Americans and their historic contributions to the Nation. For its 2017 Filipino American History Month theme, the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) commemorates the 70th Anniversary of the 1947 Military Bases Agreement between the United States and the Philippines, the monumental effect it had on US-Philippines relations and the larger Pacific Rim, and the profound effect the law had upon the Filipina/o American community nationwide. This year also marks the 35th anniversary of the Filipino American National Historical Society, which preserves and disseminates the history of Filipino Americans.

The Consulate General of the Philippines strongly encourages all Filipino-American communities in Chicago, suburban Illinois, and the Midwest, as well as those in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana, to hold relevant activities to celebrate the Filipino American History Month (FAHM) this October. We would like to invite everyone to actively participate and support the celebration of the Filipino American History Month Celebrations in Chicago and the Midwest. The schedule of events/activities is listed below. Let us take pride of our Filipino heritage and history.  Let us come together and make every October celebration – a meaningful and memorable month.

2017 Piyesta Pinoy – Another Huge Success, Year four and stronger than ever!

2017 Piyesta Pinoy – Another Huge Success

Year four and stronger than ever!

Bolingbrook, IL — One of Chicagoland’s biggest celebrations of the Philippine culture returned to Bolingbrook for the 4th year on Saturday, June 10, 2017 and it was a huge success. An estimated crowd of about 7,000 came to join the Piyesta in spite of the very hot but windy weather. For the second consecutive year in Piyesta Pinoy Bolingbrook history, we had no rain. Thanks to the consistent prayers to St Clare by the volunteers. The weather cooled off later in the evening that brought in more crowd in time for a couple more hours of entertainment featuring two bands performing at Piyesta for the first time. Messiah’s Puzzle sang several Journey favorites and Kaleidoscope Eyes closed the evening with 45 minutes of Beatles hit songs.

“As Mayor of the Village of Bolingbrook for 31 years, I am honored to extend my personal greetings to my Filipino friends for a successful 2017 Philippine Independence Day Fest. The Filipinos play an important role in our community and continue to make significant contributions for the good of all our residents.” said Village of Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar. “Bolingbrook’s Piyesta Pinoy is an excellent vehicle for strengthening the sense of togetherness and sharing the spirit of fraternal kinship that Filipinos all over the world carry in abundance. It is in this same spirit that I commend the dedication and commitment of the men and women behind this event in their continuing efforts to preserve and promote the Filipinos’ proud and rich cultural heritage in Chicagoland,” said Consul General Generoso Calonge. A huge thank you to Village of Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar and the village staff, to Consul General Generoso Calonge and to our special guest of honor from the Philippines – Congressman Salvador Belaro Jr. for your welcome remarks, program book message and most especially for your presence to join our event.

We wish to extend our warmest appreciation to the Philippine Consulate General of Chicago and the Village of Bolingbrook for hosting and for their partnership.” said PACF President Adeline Fajardo.

This year’s festival included the inaugural Piyesta Pinoy Bayani (Hero) 5K (Run, Ruck, Walk) to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Bataan Death March and to honor the Filipino and American service members who sacrificed their lives during this tragic moment in Filipino-American history.

As in the previous years, the biggest crowd came during the TFC hour. Many thanks to The Filipino Channel for bringing celebrity actor/singer/composer Jericho “Echo” Rosales along with versatile emcee Gelo from the Bay area in California.

PINOY COOKING AT PIYESTA PINOY!

For the fourth year in a row, the Village of Bolingbrook is hosting Piyesta Pinoy, the largest Filipino-American festival in the Midwest, gathering an average of 7,000 visitors. One of the highlights of the day-long event is a series of cooking demonstrations of Filipino dishes by highly accomplished Filipino-American chefs. The June 10 event also showcases Philippine music, arts and culture, kicking off with a Parade of Costumes at 11:00 a.m.

If you want to introduce your heritage to your non-Filipino friends or co-workers, inviting them to this year’s cooking demonstrations at the Piyesta Pinoy may be the perfect opportunity.

“Pinoy na Pinoy” is the theme for this year’s cooking demonstrations, featuring authentic Filipino dishes.

Chef Paul Guerrero, Culinary Director of Cooking Skills Academy, the largest recreational cooking school in Chicagoland, opens the cooking demonstrations at 1:15 p.m. with his favorite recipe of Chicken Bicol Express, a spicy specialty dish from the Bicol region traditionally made with pork, simmered in coconut milk, chili peppers and shrimp paste.

At 4:15 p.m., Ren Mendoza, CEO of Triple A Health Venture and a cooking coach for Saladmaster, is scheduled to prepare his no-oil Lechon Kawali (pork belly that is typically deep fried) paired with atchara (a concoction of shredded pickled vegetables).

Culinary instructor Marilyn McNabb, who is also the pastry chef at Meson Sabika in Naperville and a consultant for the historic Hotel Baker in St. Charles, winds up the demonstrations at 7:15 p.m. with her version of Bibingka, a rice cake traditionally served during Christmas and other holidays in the Philippines.

The cooking demos will be held at the Mindanao/Three Horses Jasmine Rice tent across the main entertainment stage of the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center located at 375 W. Briarcliff Road in Bolingbrook. The event is also made possible by the support of Saladmaster, Opulence Skin Care, Indomie Noodles, Penny’s Spa, WET USA / WET International and other sponsors.

Donna Reyes, host of the Chicago-based TV production, Fil-Am NOW!, and Chef Rampelle Aguilar, one of the show’s correspondents, will be facilitating and interacting with the audience during the demonstrations, organized by Mango Rice Productions, in partnership with the non-profits Philippine American Cultural Foundation (PACF) and the Filipino-American Community Health Initiative of Chicago (FACHIC).

Aside from free tasting of the dishes prepared during the demos (available on a first come, first serve, while supplies last basis), give-aways, gift certificates, and recipe booklets will be given to lucky members of the audience.

Piyesta Pinoy is an annual celebration which highlights the heritage and culture of the Philippines. The festival draws thousands of people, mostly from Fil-Am communities all over Illinois and neighboring states. Admission is free.

Lines started to form as early as 6 pm for the highly anticipated TGIF Concert at the Copernicus Theatre in Chicago for American Idol superstar Jessica Sanchez, the diminutive powerhouse of a performer, and for Mikey Bustos, back in Chicago for another comedic romp showcasing his internet antics live onstage. The audience was not disappointed. Louella Maningas-Cabalona, producer and lead vocalist of the Samam Sama Project band, set the mood for the show with dynamic renditions of pop and original songs which was welcomed warmly by the excited throng inside the theatre.  Mikey Bustos did not disappoint either.  With the big jumbo screen behind him showing snippets of his more popular You Tube reworked hits, Mikey took the stage and gave his comedic best to the delight of his fans.  Finally, the young chanteuse and star of the show came on, and a hush came over the crowd as she started with familiar ballads, including a crowd favorite that got her a spot in the finals of American Idol, Whitney Huston’s mega hit “I Will Always Love You” which she sang effortlessly and with her own spin.  A few more upbeat songs, Jessica also ventured to give an elderly patron a kiss on the cheek, with fans video recording the moment on their smart phones.  A duet called the “The Prayer” with Mikey Bustos prior to the finale practically brought the house down, and soon, Sama Sama band joined the duo on stage, along with the young dancers and garnered a well-deserved standing ovation from the audience.

The great thing about this show is the absence of gimmicks, special effects, and unnecessary front acts.  This show showcased the best of our young Filipino American talents today, and kudos to producers Jan Paul Ferrer of Morgan Stanley, Baron and Louella Maningas-Cabalona, with the help of the Philippine American Cultural Foundation or PACF, its officers Adeline Fajardo and Ruben Salazar, and its network of volunteers, not only did the Filipino American community get to celebrate Filipino American History Month (FAHM) this October not only with style, but also with a bang! Special mention to the young performers also at the Fiesta Hall annex who performed in honor of FAHM including Schaumburg and Elk Grove Idol winner Miki Pascual, the Silayan Choir, 3JNR Rondalla, UIC FIA Modern, young lady singer Alyssa Solomon, the dynamic J-Crew, Defensor Method Eskrima, Global Pinoy winner Nina Mae Vidal and Hill Ford.

TGIF – Mission Accomplished; a list of THANK YOU’s

We did it! TGIF is arguably the biggest FIL-AM HISTORY MONTH celebration in the MIDWEST! Jessica Sanchez and Mikey Bustos brought the house down!!! Over 800 people were in attendance for the six-hour event at Copernicus Center in Chicago. Consul Ericka Anna Abad, Cook County Judge Jessica Arong O’Brien and Senator Mark Kirk‘s representative, Mark Dietzen, also graced our humble show!

A lot of the guests took the time out to tell the organizers what they thought about the show. We heard many “excellent performances”, “amazing”, “it was such a wonderful event” referring to both on the Fiesta Hall and Main Stage.

But beyond the topnotch entertainment, one of the best compliments we heard is that TGIF became a mini reunion for friends and family that have not seen each other for a long time until last Friday. We were told there was more than one instance of people crying happy tears in finding a long lost friend or cousin. That makes us want to cry happy tears too  =)

At the end of the day, that TGIF is about coming together to celebrate our people, our heritage as Filipino Americans and I can say “Mission Accomplished”!

Celebrate 2016 Filipino American History Month

FAHM
CELEBRATE THE FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH

2016 FAHM NEWSLETTER 2016
FAHM Press Release 10/12/2016 updatedpress_release_101216-rtf

Chicago, Il. – In 2009, the US Congress thru the House of Senate and House of Representatives respectively passed H. Res. 780 recognizing October 2011 and every October thereafter as Filipino American History Month (FAHM) to celebrate the history and culture of Filipino Americans and their historic contributions to the Nation. Starting in 2011, the Philippine American Cultural Foundation (PACF) spearheaded an invitation to many Filipino American organizations in Chicago and suburbs to organize a variety of events to celebrate FAHM every October.  Since 2011, Filipino American community groups in Chicago and suburbs have been working and partnering together to consolidate and promote the various events in celebration of FAHM every October. The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) announces “1946: A Turning Point” as the theme for this year’s 2016 Filipino American History Month.  The theme was chosen to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of several notable events and pieces of legislation that transformed the lives of Filipinos in the Philippines and in the United States in 1946 such as the following:

  • The Rescission Act of 1946 barred veterans in the Philippines from receiving GI Bill benefits
  • The Luce-Celler Bill on July 2, 1946 granted access to naturalization for all Filipinos who had come to the United States before March 1934 and for all Indian immigrants in the United States, however Filipino and Indian immigration was limited to 100 per year.
  • Philippine independence from the United States was granted on July 4, 1946.

The Philippine Consulate General in cooperation with the Filipino American community would like to invite everyone to actively participate and support the celebration of the Filipino American History Month Celebration in Chicago and the Midwest.
