Ron Salazar – Outstanding Community Leader

Chicago, Il. – The Chicago Cultural Alliance and the Filipino American Historical Society of Chicago are honored and proud to have presented a posthumous award for the 2019 Outstanding Community Leader to Ron Lucius Salazar at the Mosaic event held on May 6, 2019 at the Chicago History Museum in a celebration of the cultural legacy of Chicago!

Ron Salazar was an architect who worked for the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. He helped coordinate several of Chicago’s biggest events including: Taste of Chicago, Maxwell Street Market, and Christkindlmarket, exhibitions and events at Daley Plaza. He was born in Manila and was very involved with Filipino arts, history, and cultural institutions in Chicago. This included the Phiippine American Cultural Foundation, the Filipino American Historical Society of Chicago, community centers and theater groups.

Ron Salazar has served the community in various activities, events and roles throughout his life all over the greater Chicago area. He was a Board Member of the Filipino American Historical Society of Chicago, a Founding Member of the Filipino National Historical Society Greater Chicago Chapter, 2012-2019, a Board Member of the Chicago Cultural Alliance, 2007-2019 and an active volunteer in many events including the Piyesta Pinoy, the largest Filipino cultural festival in the Midwest.

On May 30, the City of Chicago will be honoring Ron by naming the portion of North Elston between Cicero and Kimberly in the Seafood City Chicago area as the HONORARY RONALD LUCIUS SALAZAR WAY. Approved: April 2019, Ward: 39, Alderman: Margaret Laurino, Neighborhood: Albany Park.

Ron has dedicated himself to serving others. He said in one of his posts that “Why I Enjoy My Work.There’s no magic in what I do. I am just showing the best that all communities can be. Congratulations Ron. We wish you were there to receive the award that you so deserve but we know you were there watching us from heaven. Ron’s mother Rose and brother Rod accepted the award on his behalf.
